5 Minutes with Wavves: Nathan Williams on Jenny Lewis, Big Boi and his Famous Cat
Welcome to the latest edition of Pitchfork’s Guest List. Each week, we ask one of our favorite artists to fill us in on what they’ve been up to lately: which tracks they can’t stop spinning, what books they can’t put down, and what new bands they’ve caught on tour. Real Estate is one of my favorite new bands to come out within the last year or so. BC: I started listening to E. I listen to that song probably every day, at least once. Some days more than once [ laughs ]. I’ve been really obsessed with those. BC: Two of my favorite new bands we’ve actually been lucky enough to play with. No Joy are these two girls from Montreal who arejust the most bad-ass slayers on guitar.
The fourth LP from Nathan Williams does for Nineties punk pop what his girlfriend Bethany “Best Coast” Cosentino has done for Sixties girl-group pop: rewires it for a new generation of Spotify-surfing headphone junkies. Starting with heavenly bells and tight-wound guitar slashing, his stoner minimalism gets ambition — there’s even a cello!
Self-loathing and suicidal tendencies swarm; Iggy Pop is evoked on the semi-unplugged sorta love song “Dog,” and Jeff Mangum- and Kurt Cobain-style angst haunt the title track. Frequent Nirvana echoes flirt with overkill. When a band have found a career on songs about smoking weed and being lazy, their audience can be forgiven for not expecting them to grow up. Indeed, San Diego, CA’s Wavves have neither matured nor progressed in any substantial way on Afraid of Heights, their follow up to ‘s stoner-punk opus King of the Beach.
Instead, Best Coast continued to work closely with Wavves, collaborating on an important argument that still holds up as the two bands embarked together on.
Going to a concert to see a great band is exciting in and of itself. The Californian rockers are a natural fit to tour together again as they are both musically and romantically attached. The energy on a Best Coast album is infectious when only performed by songwriter, guitarist and vocalist Bethany Cosentino and guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Bobb Bruno. When you get a full band behind the duo, a new form of energy is injected into the performance. This might be attributed to the fact that California Nights has a lot more energy than the previous two albums.
After a fantastic performance by Best Coast it was up to Wavves to show that they could be a contender. Though the tour is being billed as Best Coast Vs. Wavves, it is clear that these are two bands that fit naturally together onstage. The mutual respect also could be seen in the crowd as audience members that came to watch Best Coast stayed for Wavves and those that came for the headliner showed up early to watch the other California rockers.
Crazy for You by Best Coast is an undisputed classic for moody stoners everywhere. After all, Best Coast has put out four full-length records since then. Obviously, the problem remains, because just recently, Cosentino penned a righteous essay for Lenny Letter, the online feminist newsletter run by Lena Dunham.

The qualities that made Bethany Cosentino such an appealing rock star over the past decade were simultaneously causing her to unravel. By Caryn Ganz. She spoke out about sexual misconduct in the music industry in , a year before MeToo took off. With that said, she paused to dip a thin brush into a small ceramic palette. But an outspoken mob always seemed to be challenging the band in its early days.
Cosentino was very online, and very sensitive to the digital daggers piercing her music, her personal life and her looks. I should lock myself in my room for five days.

The band consists of songwriter, guitarist and vocalist Bethany Cosentino and guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Bobb Bruno. That would be surf/punk rock band Wavves from San Diego, California I’m still trying to figure out if their infamous stoner lead singer Nathan Williams is still dating weed friendly Bethany Cosentino of indie pop/lo-fi rock duo Best Coast. This is his latest release since ‘s Afraid of Heights, not counting.
Best Coast have always been a delightful embodiment of catharsis. The California rock duo of Bethany Consentino and Bobb Bruno have been rattling off intensely personal guitar pop songs since their classic debut Crazy For You , but their new album, Always Tomorrow , out now via Concord Records, provides a different kind of catharsis.
A decade ago, Best Coast were the definition of a hype band. But beyond their sun-soaked, emotional indie rock songs and cloud of fame, Consentino was having trouble dealing with success. Consentino turned to drugs and alcohol to numb the pain and projected an image of a perpetually cool, unfazed musician, but she was facing an internal crisis that became too large to ignore. After their album California Nights , she isolated herself, feeling miserable and creatively uninspired.
But then a song fell out of her, which became the golden ticket she needed. In late , she decided to make that song a reality by becoming sober. Her creative gears eventually began to turn again, and she brought in guitarist Bobb Bruno to write songs with her for the first time. He sent music for her to write to, and four of his songs ended up on their new album Always Tomorrow. Paste talked to Cosentino about her past, present and future in one of the most beloved bands of the decade, Best Coast.
Like A Weed? Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino Grows Up
With big guitars, direct lyrics, and a pleasantly laid-back attitude, the Los Angeles duo Best Coast play a tuneful version of punk rock that nods toward ’60s pop and ’90s alt rock informed by the sunny days of their hometown. Their albums range from simple Ramones style their debut Crazy for You to arena-ready ‘s California Nights. Their popularity as a live act grew steadily and the musical bond between Cosentino and Bruno held firm.
The duo’s album, Always Tomorrow, shows the band still in love with the hooky bubblegum-punk sound they started out with, and stretching out in new areas, like commercial radio pop. A former child actress, Cosentino started writing songs in her teens and gaining a strong online following by the time she was 17, thanks to a handful of poppy songs she made available on her MySpace page under the name Bethany Sharayah. She soon decided her heart wasn’t in making teen pop and pivoted in a very different direction as a member of the spacy experimental pop group Pocahaunted.

As Best Coast prepares to kick off another national tour, Cosentino opens up about body image issues, her not-so-secret love for Hillary Duff and California Nights. In our first interview, we talked about body image and the music business. Do you still feel pressure to look a certain way? Not really. Like I said, people will always comment. I learned that for myself it was about reaching a level of confidence with myself physically and mentally where I no longer care about any of those things people say.
Why do you think? Do you even pay attention to what critics say? The way I know a record is successful is if the fans like it and if we are still playing sold out shows all over the place…and we are. How do you think California Nights has been received? Fade Away? As far as I can tell, people are really enjoying California Nights.
The feedback from fans has been amazing, it charted at 24 on Billboard, which is the highest of any of our records.
Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino on Her Road to Sobriety and Self-Acceptance
In , in the aftermath of Bush and the emergence of cutesy cultural icons like Zooey Deschanel, when cat videos on YouTube were getting more views than the State of the Union, indie rock began embracing the daftness of the times. Against this backdrop came the indomitable rise of Best Coast, a duo born in the suburbs of the San Fernando Valley, who mixed plainspoken lyrics and ’60s girl-group pastiche with Spectorian professionalism.
Avoiding any of the cheeky humor or fey detachment of their contemporaries, Best Coast was heart-on-sleeve authentic — which turned out to be highly bankable.
Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino has gone through some noticeable changes Wavves’ Nathan Williams or simply getting older, on Best Coast’s third studio to touch on finding strength after a break-up and reflecting on what went wrong. December (1) · November (13) · October (15).

I saw them in Boulder on Valentine’s Day. Hipster Runoff later accused Cosentino who at the time was trying to imitate the always unamused Lana Del Rey of lip-synching. Williams and company seemed antagonistic.
I was certain the wave of SoCal-led surfer punk was about to crash and no one would remember these two bands in five years time. But here we are, almost exactly five years later, and Best Coast and Wavves are at the top of their game. On Saturday night, the Bluebird Theater was sold out for the pair, and the crowd was appropriately rowdy. Because the two bands are no longer poster children for the stoner beach lifestyle; they mean much more now.
Cosentino wore an oversized Sublime shirt and had messy hair. She ripped on her guitar, made awkward small talk about missing Snacks the cat, and managed to get the entire crowd singing and dancing along.
With their official debut album Are You Satisfied? Their fifth record properly titled V came out last month. Starting off with British band Slaves, their debut is quite impressive. Their latest release comes off the Virgin EMI label. Are You Satisfied? The protest sounding songs seem to be resonating with many.
Have you seen this movie? It reminded me of Bethany Cosentino and Nathan Williams. Both hail from California and are full of a kind of youthful vigor and passion that makes me both incredibly happy and sad at the same time. Wavves is everything I love about rock and punk all rolled up into with a generous sprinkling of killer stoner-riffs and shit-tons of attitude. And not to draw too many comparisons to another famous California band i.
Best Coast and Wavves, could their names be a more perfect match? And their music compliments each other as well. Where he is sour, she is sweet. Their unwieldy, moody young love is laid bare in both of their records, almost to an embarrassing extent. That these two people, a stoner-skater boi and a cool-ass artist chick, would need each other so much is as startling as it is pedestrian. By themselves Bethany and Nathan are good, but with the help of their love, what they create is amazing.
They complement each other in ways that only a man and woman in love could.
